Yao Ming, voted his country’s most popular athlete, said he expects to be ready for the Beijing Olympics even though his recovery from surgery is dragging on. “The Olympics is the biggest opportunity for any athlete and no one wants to miss it,” the Houston Rockets center said at a news conference in Beijing today. “I will do my best.”
The 7-foot-6 Yao had surgery to repair a stress fracture in his left foot in March and missed the final two months of the National Basketball Association season, putting his participation in the Olympics in jeopardy.
